6TOROS6
(ES)
No, not the Spanish taurine weekly (they have a link in our "newspapers/mags" section), but a site maintained by Ramon Avila. Ramon has a radio (I believe) program by the same name, and this site is dedicated to the bulls in his hometown -- to many the heartland of Mexican bullfighting aficion today -- Aguascalientes.

A los toros
con Via Digital

(ES)

Although the exact relation is unclear, this (debuted May '99) web site appears to be a joint venture between Sportec (see their own site "Noticias Taurinas" in this listing) and Via Digital (the Spanish cable company that has broadcast rights for most all important ferias of the Iberian temporada). The site is planned to include interviews and reportage; editorials; carteles; brief summaries of results from a wide variety of locals; etc.
A.C.S.
How the taurine world has changed! This website is maintained by Asesores en Computacion y Sistemas, which sells a computerized bloodline tracking system (for ganaderos). No need to keep records of newly born calves in dusty volumes in the finca's cellar or library. It can all be done electronically now with this system currently used by more than 100 ganaderias worldwide (see listing on the website).

Aldeia Velha
(PT)

maintained by Francisco Fernandes A Portuguese site intended to further the taurine traditions -- including the Capeia Raiana -- of Aldeia Velha (a town on the Portuguese-Spanish frontera, in the Guarda District, near Sabugal).

Alternative
(FR)

Maintained by the eponymous Paris-based group of French aficionados, the website contains oodles of taurine information not available elsewhere on the internet -- including a bibliography of books from French publishers, galleries of photography and painting, a detalied look at the Arles bullfight school and its current students, etc. If you speak French, this one's for you. If not, pay a visit anyway. There is material here you'll find accessible.
Asociación
El Toro
de Madrid

(ES)
This marvelous site is, we believe, maintained by Martín Ruiz Gárate for the eponymous taurine peña. The site is continually being updated and is one of the best taurine sites on the internet. It contains much information unavailable elsewhere on the net -- well worth frequent visits. If you don't read Spanish you'll have trouble here, but what better motivation to learn!
Avance Taurino
(ES)
An elaborate site that debuted early in 1999, maintained from Valencia (the one in Spain). Contains schedules, criticism (mostly, it seems, written by Paco Delgado, a well-known taurine commentator for Radio Nacional), an abbreviated ranking of this season's performers, and much much more.

Bullfights.Org
(US)

maintained by Gerald Campos Site (including news, schedules, etc.) with a long I/net history that has previously been called Bullfight or Lo Mejor de los Toros, Bullfighting at its Finest, and FightingImages.com -- especially noteworthy for its coverage of news from the México-USA frontera

Bullfighting
in
California

(US & PT)

maintained by George DaSilva -- the first web pages dedicated specifically to the Portuguese-style bullfighting that takes place in California, the state where the most bullfights are scheduled each year. Schedules and reviews are available with plans for much more.
[Iyo] Bullfighting
in
Uwajima, Japan
(US)
maintained by Kenji Nitta -- no, not traditional Iberian bullfighting, but something the site's webmaster characterizes as more akin to Sumo, bull against bull -- a local traditional event for hundreds of years.
Burladero.com (ES)
An ambitious site managed by a group of Spanish information science mavens and taurine internet names (Miguel Ángel Moncholi, Miguel Barbero, Nuria Pombo, Marisa Navarro, and Martín Ruiz). Site officially debuted Feb. 01, 2000, with the intention of becoming the Internet's premier taurine vortal. The site is well connected, and well financed, so it just may pull it off. You can't find a better place on the Internet to catch late-breaking taurine news, though it's all in Spanish and presented in a most garish fashion.
Carlillos Taxidermia
To our knowledge, the first taurine taxidermist on the Internet -- a third-generation, family run business in Jaén. Site includes business description and information about local taurine events.
Centro Taurino
México España
Maintained by the eponymous peña in Aguascalientes, founded in 1986 by nine fellows, once affiliated with the Grupo Taurino Aguascalientes. The site contains a collection of taurine links, and critical/analytic texts written by peña members and others.
Circle of Sand
(US)
maintained by Dale Pierce and Joe Grana -- a largely English-language taurine site that debuted in 2001. Despite its hobbiest look, you'll find some information here not available elsewhere on the net (e.g., photos of the taurine museum in Salamanca, Jesús Solarzano, and Fernando Dos Santos). Includes brief book reviews written by Pierce, Grana, and others.
Club Taurino
de
Pamplona

(ES)
maintained by the club -- a mini-treasure for Pamplonistas. Site includes information about the club's activities; poetry (an homage to the first Estadounidense killed during the encierros); contact addresses (snail-mail and phone only); and a brief history of "El Círculo Taurino Bayonés," among other things. Site is labled "Año XVIII - Nº 17" so it appears the contents are not going to be updated too frequently.
Corrida de
Toros
(ES)
Maintained by Todo sobre España -- a site dedicated to promoting tourism in Spain. The taurine portion of this site is one of the few TRUELY poly-lingual bullfighting sites, available also in English, and in German versions. Also a good place to see some innovative taurine animations -- come get a glimpse of the direction on-line site design is taking.
Corridas.net
(FR)
Maintained by André Viard -- French site (connected to the publishing group, Groupe Midi Libre) containing news, background information, book reviews, biographical information, French and Spanish cartels, etc.
Cortijo
de Arenales
(ES)
maintained by the Conde de la Maza, (indirectly, anyway) site is intended to foster tourist interest in the the Conde's operations -- including tours of the ganaderia, the horse-breeding activities, etc. The Cortijo intends to increase the amount of on-line materials about the ganaderia in the future.
Los Encierros
(ES)
site dedicated to those who "run" with the bulls in Spain's numerous street festivals -- not speaking here of Pamplona and it's San Fermin, but the myriad local festivals that get much less attention than their numbers would suggest warranted.
España al desnudo
(Spain Uncovered)
(US)
maintained by Javier Gayán A large catalog of web-based information of interest to any hispanophile (including Spanish government sites; Spanish universities, newspapers and periodicals; sports; internet providers; tourism; banks and economic sites; and -- certainly not last for our purposes -- a section focused on taurine sites), all maintained by a Spanish graduate student studying "behavioral genetics" in Colorado.
Fermin
(ES/US)
maintained by the famous taurine tailor in Madrid -- a site with an interesting look into his work process and product. If you've ever wondered reading bullfight summaries how to tell "tabacco" from "tabacco virginia," or "celest" from "celest claro," there are (among many, many other things here ) color charts to help you.
Festes Valencianes
(ES)
maintained by Isaac Ferrera 'Cuasca' -- site dedicated to the demimonde of street taurine festivals (which paradoxically, though lesser known outside Spain, occur with greater frequency in Spain than do "formal" corridas)
Fiestas Taurinas
(ES)
maintained by Alberto de Jesús, taurine photographer and probably the most published taurine author whose work focuses on the stunning array of local taurine festivals in Spain (festivals that take place with much greater frequency than the better known formal bullfights).
José Antonio
del Moral

(ES)
maintained by José Antonio del Moral (an important Spanish taurine critic / author / journalist), himself, the site contains much of his writing about the Spanish temporada(s), 1999-2001 (and taurine events elsewhere).
Lances Taurinas
(ES)
maintained by José Luis Castro in Cáceres, but only barely so. Site contains some news (irregularly posted) from Spain and France. An earlier version of the site functions, at times, more efficiently than this, though the contents are not mirrored 100%.
Le Forum Toro
(FR)
maintained by Paul-André Pays Although created and maintained by Mr. Pays, this site is truly a "forum," a place to spout off about anything taurine -- you can initiate new topics or respond to others' posts -- so it's content is primarily determined by the people who read and post to it.
Luisite
(ES)
maintained by Luis Trejo, in México, the site contains basic information about bullfighting (glossary, historical tidbits, descriptions of the parts of a bullfight and its participants), a photo gallery, some biographical information, summaries of the major bullfights in Plaza México, and more -- all in Spanish.
Matadors
(US)
maintained by John Hodgen the site contains an homage to seven of history's most important/influential bullfighters, and brief (very brief) background information on one aspect or another of the bulls (including an intesting alternate point of view for those who think the Virgin of the Macarena is the Patron Saint of bullfighting).
Melpi
(ES)
maintained by this Spanish organization involved with the breeders of fighting bulls and Andalusian horses -- site contains information about taurine and equine ganaderias (illustring their brands and a bit of historical data), photos of horses, bulls, and toreros ... and plans for much more material.
El Mundo del Toro y El Caballo
(ES)
A very ambitious site that, oddly, gives no information about those who have created and maintain it. Includes information not available elsewhere -- loads of information about Spanish, French and Portuguese plazas, a CD-ROM about taurine surgery, a program that lets you design your own cartel (you name alongside those of two toreros, and bulls of your choosing), and much much more. Unfortunately, schedules are not kept well up-to-date.
Mundo Taurino
(US)
maintained by Stanley Conrad An attempt to facilitate bullfight aficionados' access to taurine information by cataloging everything that can be found on the internet -- by providing home pages to taurine organizations that do not have their own sites -- and by providing contact/access information for traditional forms of information (e.g., magazines, television broadcasts, films, etc.) -- by maintaining an international mailing-list for the dissemination of taurine news.
Mundotoro
(ES)
maintained by Nuria Pombo (webmaster) and Israel Vicente (Editor in Chief), for a company called Tauromaquia SA, with the help of a team of contributing journalists from around the world. This is a very sophisticated site with useful background information, news and commentary. One would only wish they had had the courtesy not to choose a name so readily confused with Mundo Taurino's.
My Bullfighting World
(US/ES)
maintained by Mario Carrión, a man with many hats (among other things, a retired matador, Spanish language teacher, and taurine web pioneer (regarding the latter, see below at La Tauromaquia)). Site includes more analytic material than many taurine sites, including analyses of recent temporadas, and predictions about the upcoming season(s).
Noticias Taurinas
(ES)
maintained by the Spanish agency, Sportec. Feature stories updated each Thursday, and brief news items in the "carteles y festejos" section.
¡Ole Matador!
(ES)
maintained by José Humberto Magaña Gamez A site (that debuted in May, '97) dedicated to promotion of the fiesta brava in Mexico. The webmaster is a university student who also does radio, TV, and print taurine journalism.
Paco
Cespedes
(ES)
maintained by Ramos Cespedes This site, "subtitled" Trayectoria de un Torero Peruano, is more than simply an homage to the retired Peruvian matador, Paco Cespedes. You can also find here links to more information about the fiesta en Peru than in most other web sites. The site includes an "index" page that lets you see which sections you've already visited -- a big help if you want to stop by quickly to see what's new.
Página central de la Plaza de Toros de México
(ES)
Site that really has very little to do with the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City. It's a general purpose, background site, written in Spanish. Has nice background music, though. Unfortunately you 've got to put up with those annoying GeoCities pop-up windows at every turn.
Páginas de Toros
(ES)
maintained by David Alemán, another website dedicated to the toros in Ecuador.
Plaza de Toros
de Cali
Cañaveralejo

(ES)
The site contains current temporada schedules, ticket prices (including discount abono offers), history of the Plaza, information about the resident school of tauromaquia, a photo gallery, and news items. Debuted May 1, 1998.
Plaza de Toros
La Merced

(ES)
The site contains current temporada schedules, ticket prices and contact numbers, and a bit of history of the Plaza de Toros "La Merced" in Huelva.
Plaza de Toros
Monumental

(US)
Finally, a website for one of the important plazas on the US-Mexico frontera -- Plaza de Toros Monumental, in Ciudad Juárez, minutes across the border from El Paso, Texas. Site is planned to include information on scheduled bullfights (otherwise, rather difficult to obtain).
Plaza de Toros
Nuevo Laredo

(US)
maintained by by the administration of the Plaza de Toros "Lauro Luis Longoria." The site contains current temporada schedules, the plaza history, ticket prices and purchase locations, a map to help locate the plaza (including distances in miles from major cities in Texas), information about musical concerts in the Plaza, and more.
Portal Taurino
(ES)
Director: Francisco Gallardo. Though subtitled "Revista taurina en Internet" (and previously called Toros en Sevilla) this site has more in common with the other taurine websites than with a true "magazine." This site is a fabulous archive of taurine information and good source of news (which, though Sevilla based and locally weighted, spans the mundo taurino). Information is all in Spanish -- sometimes tough to navigate for English speakers since, for example, Spanish alphabetization conventions are used (and they are not the same as those common to the English-speaking world).
Rincon Taurino
(ES)

maintained by David Gutiérrez Ruiz, a Mexican national currently an ex-pat in Chicago. Once called "¡Nuestra Fiesta Brava!" and before that "Bullfighting in Mexico!" and "¡Toros en México!" -- this site has a near exclusive focus on bullfighting in Mexico.

Rough Guide
to
Bullfighting

(US +)
maintained by Andalucia.com, a large site designed to promote tourism and business in Andalucia. The taurine pages contain basic background information, and some unique items -- like photos of several matadoras (yes, Cristina Sánchez is not the only one).
Stierkampf
maintained by Dr. Andreas Krumbein -- a virtual web-peña, birthed in Germany. Contains photos and other things which our unfamiliarity with German won't permit us to describe.
Taurinet
(ES)
maintained by Oscar Rosmano -- the first new site to debut in '98. Dedicated to the webmaster's father, the Portuguese matador, Oscar Rosmano (about whom biographical information and plenty of photos are provided.)
La Tauromaquia
(DE)
maintained by Martin Schwitzner -- unique among the Internet's taurine websites, this site was birthed by a young German aficionado. Do to Mundo Taurino's limited German language skills, we can't be absolutely sure about what the site does and doesn't contain -- but there are informational sections with general description of various aspects of the mundo taurino, lists of taurine books available in German, links, etc.
La Tauromaquia:
The Art of Bullfighting

(US +)
maintained by Mario Carrión -- A very good collection of taurine resources and links some in Spanish, some in English. The webmaster here is a retired matador whose taurine writing appears (in Spanish) with some regularity in the magazine, Coloquio (edited by Javier Bustamante, who is also the webmaster of the Hispanic Pages in the USA, the "mother site" that plays host to La Tauromaquia).
Tauromaquia
Portuguesa
On-Line

(PT)
maintained by Fernando Dias -- Site (debuting in May, 1997) dedicated to the dissemination of information about all aspects of bullfighting that have Portuguese roots. The site is still young, so much is under construction. But take a look to see what is planned. The entire site is written in Portuguese -- but with even a little knowledge of Spanish, you should be able to work your way through most of the site.
Toiros & Cavalos
(PT)
maintained by Eduardo Leonardo -- one of the few Portuguese taurine sites, with news, historical information, schedules, interviews, book reviews (although in Portuguese, taurine works written in other languages are reviewed as well), etc.
El Toro de Lidia
(ES)
maintained by José Heredia León, a veternerian in Asturias -- intended as an homage to the toro bravo, "Spain's greatest zoological contribution to the rest of the world ... the greatest expression of strength and valor" -- loaded with interesting photos.
El Toreo
(FR)
Essentially an advertisement for the Minitel database of the same name. Material posted here is a small, small fraction of what is available from them via Minitel (not for free, of course). But there are invaluable things here that appear nowhere else on the web (for example, phone numbers of plazas in France and Spain), including a short calendar of upcoming events in France (not always easy to locate elsewhere).
ToroNet -- Peru
(ES)
Unclear who maintains this website, a pity as it's one of the best (if not THE best) website dedicated to the bulls in Perú. Includes historical information about things taurine in Perú, and about the lovely Plaza de Acho (according to the website, the third oldest in the world, established in 1766). Includes descriptions and contact information for the major taurine organizations in Peru.

Toropolis
(ES)

maintained by a fellow named Germán who lives in Barcelona -- a thematic area in "Telepolis" (much like a Spanish-language GeoCities), offering taurin

e-interested folks a place to congregate, chat, swap information, etc.

Los Toros
(ES)
maintained by a group of Spaniards including Mario Tascón, Patricia Blázquez, Miguel Angel Ruiz de Valbuena, and Ana Torán. A phenomonal site, for seasoned aficionados and those with little (or no) background. The site is beautifully designed, and filled with useful reference material not available elsewhere on the internet (including animated graphics illustrating all sorts of things that defy verbal description -- you may never see a kill "recibiendo" in real life ... but you can see one animated here). For those of you with multimedia computers, the site provides background music during your visit.
Los Toros
maintained by Alfonso Landaluce in Madrid. An ambitious site that's chock full of interesting information, much of which is not repeated in the other taurine sites.
Toros Barcelona
(ES/FR/US)
maintained by Germán Jiménez Andreu -- dedicated to informing the world about the bulls in Barcelona, no easy task in this largely taurine-indifferent (when not hostile) corner of Spain. No better source of information on the web concerning things taurine in Catalunya.
Toros
en Cádiz

(es)
maintained by Francisco Orgambides in Cádiz. This marvelous site is full of information about the history of the bulls in Cádiz, local ganaderias, taurine photography and painting; and includes a forum where you can contribute your two cents worth (or pesetas, or pesos, or centimes, or whatever). The toros pages are hosted by a larger site focused with a wide-angle lens on Cádiz.
Los Toros
en Ecuador

(es)
maintained by Fabian Cuesta in Quito. The web's first site dedicated to dissemination of information about the bulls in Ecuador. Includes schedules, links, a gallery with photos of Julián López "El Juli," news, and criticism. Unfortunately, you've got to bear with the annoying advertisements from Geocities ... but that's not Fabian's fault.
Toros y Fotos
(Fr)
maintained by Antoine Matéos in Southern France. The site has schedules for the current temporada in France, commentaries on French corridas, collections of photos, a mailing list, and more. One of the few French-language taurine sites.
¡Toros
en Holanda!
(DL +)
maintained by Marco Legemaate The webmaster here, a Dutch anthropologist, has the distinction of having created one of the first internet taurine web sites. Materials are posted in Dutch (mostly), Spanish and English (not all materials available in all languages).
Toros y Toreros
(ES)
This site is maintained by/for the Colombian taurine television program of the same name -- Colombia's major taurine TV presence since 1993. Site debuted in March '98 with plans to become the best Colombian taurine site -- schedules of upcoming bullfights, summaries of taurine events, biographies, a ranking of performance for the current temporada, and much, much more. In Spanish.
LasVentas.com
(ES)
maintained by a large, well-financed editorial team, this site is a marvelous collection of information about Las Ventas, the cathedral of bullfighting in Madrid, one of the most important plazas in the world. Contains schedules, biographical information and performance statistics for the bullfighters and ganaderias who have appeared in Las Ventas this season, loads of photos from this season's bullfigfights, narrative summaries of this season's bullfights, information about the plaza itself, and much more. Although its a treasure trove of important information, one might wish that -- with the enormous financial resources available to them -- a bit more attention could be paid to the mundo taurino outside the walls of Las Ventas.
ZIA Bullfighting Resources
(US)
maintained by ZIA Resources (a "safe place" from which families and educators can search the web) -- a brief catalog worth an occasional visit)

If you have comments or suggestions (sites to add -- including your own),
please send them to Mundo Taurino
